The Keep Australia Beautiful ACT Sustainable Cities Awards 2014 closes at the end of this week. Residents, community based organisations, schools, businesses and local government agencies in achieving sustainability in the ACT are encouraged to apply.

2014 marks the 10th year of the awards having been held in the Nation’s Capital, with the territory finalist, announced in July, going on to enter the Australian Sustainable Cities awards towards the end of the year.

The Chairman of the ACT Sustainable Cities judging Committee Rolfe Hartley said that “for the past 10 years, the ACT Sustainable Cities Awards have showcased and celebrated the achievements of citizens and organisations at all levels in making sustainability the norm for Canberra.”

“I am always excited to see the innovation and dedication that each year’s entries demonstrate. The awards have come a long way since 2004.”

National Chief Executive Officer of Keep Australia Beautiful Peter McLean has urged all ACT sustainability programs to enter, saying “the awards recognise and celebrate everyday actions taken by Canberra’s communities to improve, maintain and sustain their local environments.”

Reasons to enter include:

Put your group, project or business forward and gain recognition as a sustainability leader in the ACT

Gain expert assessment of your project

Network with fellow green leaders

Impress potential investors

Help attract quality staff and volunteers

The winner will go on to represent the ACT in the Australian Sustainable Cities Awards.

ACT Chief Minister and patron of the awards Katy Gallagher MLA said “as our city grows to a population of 500,000, it is becoming increasingly important for us to address the challenges of creating a resilient and responsive place for all Canberrans as we move into the 21st century.”

“The Award categories this year provide the opportunity for the dedication and creativity of groups and individuals in the ACT engaged in a variety of activities to be recognised and promoted amongst our community and at a National level.”

The Keep Australia Beautiful ACT Sustainable Cities Awards are an initiative of Keep Australia Beautiful National, sponsored by the Do The Right Thing program of the Australian Food and Grocery Council’s Packaging Stewardship Forum, Category sponsor Environment & Sustainable Development Department of the ACT, and Event sponsor ANUgreen.
