Tastes fine, moderately high sodium…, May 23, 2013
    By
    Dee (By the sea) –

… so if you watch that you may want to consider a different brand. I switched to Life’s Basics, which is very similar to Plant Fusion. Both are gluten free, vegan, and all-natural. Nutritionally they compare favorably in every way except sodium and fiber, with Life’s Basics having lower sodium. PlantFusion doesn’t list any fiber, Life’s Basics is 8% of DV. Both have an amino acid profile; Life’s Basics gives a breakdown on how many mg of each type of acid is in their powder, while PlantFusion just lists the sources of the acids. They are similar in price and the flavor and digestibility of both are very good. They are very finely ground powders with only a hint of grittiness while drinking.

    Quick nutrition info:

    PlantFusion – Nature’s Most Complete Plant Protein Vanilla Bean – 1 lb. (454 g)
    Serving Size: 1 Scoop (approximately 30 g)
    Calories 120
    Calories from Fat 20
    Total Fat 2 g 3%
    Saturated Fat 0 g 0%
    Cholesterol 0 g 0%
    Sodium 390 mg 16%
    Potassium 60 mg 2%
    Total Carbohydrate 4 g 1%
    Sugars (from Fructose) 4 g
    Protein 21 g 42%

LifeTime Vitamins Life’s Basic Plant Protein Vanilla 18.6 oz.
    Serving Size: 35.1 g (1 heaping scoop)
    Calories 129
    Calories from Fat 10
    Total Fat 1 g 2%
    Saturated Fat 0 g 0%
    Cholesterol 0 mg 0%
    Sodium 43 mg 2%
    Total Carbohydrate 5 g 2%
    Dietary Fiber 2 g 8%
    Sugars 2.67 g
    Protein 22 g 44%

So bottom line… PlantFusion is a very good choice, but if sodium is a concern consider a lower-sodium powder.

    Loving this plant-based protein!, June 28, 2010

As an athletic vegetarian who aspires to be all-natural, it’s hard to find a way to stay away from nutritionism while still giving my body what it needs to continue performing well. Although I believe protein powders are generally processed and are not as natural as say the protein found in peanuts, mushrooms, or meat; Plantfusion is a happy medium between the processed and the natural. My favorite aspects of this protein powder are the vegan, 100% natural, non-GMO, soy-free ingredients. There is also no xylitol used to sweeten this powder either, another winning factor for me, as I have experienced intense migraines with very similar protein powders that DO use xylitol. This product instead uses stevia, as a sweetener I presume, and though I would prefer it did not contain this either, I have resolved to use it despite that.
The powder mixes very easily with anything: homemade fruit smoothies, yogurt, (rice/almond) milk, or plain water. Give it 10 seconds of shaking in a protein mixer or even 10 rotations of a spoon in water and it has dissolved! The texture is neither thin nor thick and leaves no chunks; leaving me with a drink that has substance but still easy for sipping. The powder should be put inside whatever container you use for preparing/drinking with just a minimal amount of care. As it is lighter than sugar in weight but heavier than confectioner’s sugar; it has a tendency to create small clouds of powder if carelessly dumped into a tall glass.
The vanilla flavor is nice, not overly rich; a nice accent to any beverage. I may try the flavorless option available next time as it is less expensive and I don’t mind my smoothies without its extra taste.
I have never experienced any problems in digestion when using PlantFusion, which I hear can be a problem for some when using protein powder. I have one drink with a scoop of PlantFusion on days I am cycling or running, within an hour after my activity has ended. I use it to both supplement my diet, and help maintain/create muscle mass.
Overall, this is a great product for anyone seeking an alternative to protein powders that are ingredient-dense, soy-based, whey-based, and/or contain xylitol. Have fun, be active, stay natural!

    Awesome protein, July 15, 2011

After realizing the muscle milk powder I was buying from GNC was loaded with chemicals and heavy metals like mercury and lead, not to mention all the artificial sugars and flavors, I decided to research a healthier option for a complete protein.

I picked this powder because it has protein from different sources (pea, artichoke, amaranth, and quinoa) and also has an amino acid profile listed on the side which seemed to be more balanced than some of the other options.
The powder itself is very fine but I am okay with that. I might not like it if I had to mix it with water, but I put mine in a blender with ice, coconut milk, organic vanilla extract, coca powder, and stevia. I’m also wanting to try it with banana and peanut butter added in. I purchased the unflavored version because I knew I’d be mixing it with other flavors.

Otherwise, this powder filled me up nicely and actually lowered my cravings for sweet food. The Muscle milk I was using before had a lot of artificial sugar which I think increased my cravings for real sugar. There are also 120 calories a serving with 22g of protein versus muscle milk’s 360 calories and 32g of protein. This is less protein but you feel so much better when you take this stuff.

In conclusion this is a great product. I wouldn’t recommend taking it with water, but it makes a rather hearty and healthy meal replacement. It has a pretty balanced amino acid profile as well because it mixes more than one plant protein, and it also has enzymes. It balances my blood sugar nicely, and causes no digestion issues.

Amino acid profile for inquiring minds: (in mg)

    Alanine: 920
    Arginine: 1,860
    Aspartic Acid: 2,460
    Cystine: 215
    Glutamic Acid: 3,740
    Glycine: 1,090
    Histidine: 535
    Isoleucine: 1,320
    Leucine: 2,160
    Lysine: 1,540
    Methionine: 235
    Phenylalanine: 1,180
    Proline: 960
    Serine: 1,130
    Threonine: 835
    Tryptophan: 215
    Tyrosine: 810
    Valine: 1,430
