These past few days, you might have noticed something different: a hint of a smile on the mouths of your usually sour-faced classmates at 8 a.m., a dash of yellow and orange on the leaves, or perhaps a light breeze blowing the unmistakable scent of cinnamon through the sweltering air. As you walk into your favorite Starbucks, the twinkle in your barista’s eye confirms your suspicions: the Pumpkin Spice Latte has returned.

In its glorious ten years of existence, the Pumpkin Spice Latte has come to signify much more than a delicious cup of coffee. The cinnamon, nutmeg and clove flavors banish the remnants of a long hot summer and assure us that fall is finally on its way. With PSLs come cozy Goodwill sweaters, cool evenings, football games and millions of filtered Instagram photos (#pumpkinspice). One sip of that warm and welcoming espresso topped with whipped cream and you wonder how you went so long without it.

Natalie Collins, a junior at Florida State, orders the lovely latte on an almost daily basis.

“Since Starbucks only carries them for a limited time each year, it’s important to consume as many pumpkin-flavored things as possible,” Collins said. “Autumn is my favorite time of year and the PSL has definitely become synonymous with the season.”

The Pumpkin Spice Latte can be ordered in its traditional steaming hot form, as an iced beverage and even as a frappuccino, making it the perfect drink for any weather.

FSU senior and Starbucks barista Jennifer Lamb said that PSL season is the busiest, but most exciting time to work.

“Our customers just get so excited when the fall drink specials are back in stock,” Lamb said. “Despite how chaotic it gets, there’s still a positive energy that can only be attributed to the PSL.”

While pumpkin spice worship is extremely common in these times, there are the select few who wept for a different taste. The Salted Caramel Mocha and Chocolate Chai Tea Latte have also been introduced this week, providing a pumpkin-less option while still maintaining an autumn aroma.

Though Starbucks has made customers happy with all of their coffee concoctions, nothing can compare to the PSL’s cult following. In an effort to capitalize off of this obsession, Starbucks has introduced “PSL 10” gift cards and tumblers that are selling quickly in stores and online.

“The Pumpkin Spice Latte is a comfort and tradition people at this point. Sipping on a PSL while you’re studying has become just as important as carving jack-o’-lanterns on Halloween or stuffing yourself with turkey during Thanksgiving,” Collins said. “There’s just something that’s reassuring and soothing about it that we can’t get enough of.”

MORE: Brad Pitt … Gypsies

voices.yahoo.com/brad-pitt-pikey-culture-look-shelta-8035…

— The Cultural Connection

Brought to world attention by Brad Pitt’s character Mickey in the popular 2000 film, Snatch, the term "Pikey" is a pejorative, slang term used mainly in the UK to refer to Irish travelers, gypsies, and people of low social class, groups who refer to themselves as "Pavees" and call their language Shelta.

Brought to the US during the late 19th century, the derivative "piker" is used even today in Appalachian America to refer to someone who is stingy, while in Australia it is used to mean someone who refuses to do something within a group.

Found in old English–remaining nearly unchanged through the centuries–pikey is strongly associated with itinerant life and constant travel, with pikey directly derived from pike which, during the 16th century meant to "go away from, or to go on" and related to the words turnpike (toll-road) and pike-man (toll-collector). The term probably applies directly to those who continually use the pike or turnpike road.

Linguists assume that pikey was probably in common use even during William Shakespeare’s lifetime, referenced in Andrew Boorde’s 1547 text Gypsy Politics and Social Change: "Egipcions be swarte and doth go disgsy’d in theyr apparel, contrary to other nacyons: they be lyght fyngered, and use pyking."

The Oxford English Dictionary traces the earliest use of pikey to The Times in August 1838, which referred to strangers who had come to the Isle of Sheppey as "pikey-men."

In 1847, J. O. Halliwell in his Dictionary of Archaic and Provincial Words recorded the use of pikey to mean ‘a Gypsy."

And in 1887, W. D. Parish and W. F. Shaw in the Dictionary of Kentish Dialect recorded the use of the word to mean "a turnpike traveller; a vagabond; and so generally a low fellow."

Likewise, Hotten’s Dictionary of Slang defines pikey as "to go away" and Pikey as a tramp or a Gypsy. He lists "pikey-cart" as an habitable vehicle suggestive of country life.

The Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society similarly agrees that the term pikey solely applied (negatively) to Gypsies; the connotation linking gypsies to petty theft, crime, and general low socioeconomic activities, as the text Understanding Representation states: "Pikey is one of the negative words associated with gypsies: people who fight and steal equals ‘pikeys.’ It includes fortune-tellers such as the famous Gypsy Rose Lee."

In the past century, then-US Senator Harry S. Truman compared the banking industry of the 1930s, whom he referred to as "pikers," to the notorious bank robber Jesse James. And during this same period, pikey was commonly applied to Irish travelers (who were also labeled "tinkers" and "knackers") and non-Roma Gypsies who followed a similar lifestyle.

In 2003 the Firle Bonfire Society burned an effigy of a family of gypsies inside a caravan after travelers damaged local land. The license plate on the caravan read P1KE, after which a storm of protests and accusations of racism followed. Twelve members of the society were subsequently arrested, but the Crown Prosecution Service decided there was insufficient evidence to proceed on a charge of "incitement to racial hatred." But in more recent years it has become a term of abuse and in the eyes of the law using it can even be deemed a racist offence, given its association with Irish travelers and Roma gypsies.

In the past decade, the definition of pikey became even looser and is sometimes used to refer to a wide section of the generally urban underclass of the country (in the UK generally known as chavs), or merely a person of any social class who "lives on the cheap" such and might be termed a Bohemian. As illustrated by the 2000 Guy Ritchie film Snatch, the negative English attitudes towards pikeys is an ongoing social reality of the British Isles even today.

The Oxford History of English notes that: "young people who use charver or pikey to identify a contemporary style of dress or general demeanor suggests an aimless "street" lifestyle, unaware of the Romany origin of the first or of connotation with ‘gypsy’ of the second. Pikey, formed from turnpike roads, as along with pikee and piker been used in the South East [sic: of England] especially since the mid-Nineteenth-Century to refer to itinerant people of all kinds and been used by traveling people to refer to those of low caste. Scally, a corresponding label originating in the North West of England, was taken up by the media and several websites, only to be superseded by chav."

A 2010 survey unearthed 127 synonyms, with "ned" favored in Scotland, "charver" in North East England, and "pikey" across the South of England.

.

— The Language

Pikey vocabulary and language is vastly dissimilar to English. For example, English/Pikey:

i, (me)

you, (mate)

he, (‘im)

she, (‘er)

it, (da)

we, (us)

you, (bheys)

they (dem)

van/pickup truck (tippidid)

sibling/brother (nuvver bruva)

look chaps (whoop/madey)

anything (nuf)

no (naan)

fit (buff ting)

yes (yeop)

mother (me-ma)

(Note: Although I grew up hearing Pikey terms, I am not over-all that familiar with it. So, please feel free to contribute corrections or further insight.)

Free is the second album by English rock group Free, recorded and released in 1969. The band had spent time touring after their debut album Tons of Sobs the previous year, and there is a marked difference in the musicianship of the band as well as Paul Rodgers’s voice. Individual members of the band seem less inclined to show off their musicianship — there are few of Paul Kossoff’s extended guitar solos that could be heard on some of the previous album’s tracks such as "Goin’ Down Slow." Whereas Tons of Sobs had been produced by Guy Stevens, Free was produced by the head of Island Records, Chris Blackwell.

Survive finals week by using these stress-relieving tactics

With the semester coming to a close, finals week is all that stands between students and winter break. With the pressure of making the grades and anticipation to go home for the holidays, clocking in the study hours can bring students to the brink.

To stay healthy and sharp during the hectic week can be a challenge, but finding ways to de-stress can help students stay sharp, focused, and successfully make it through the week.
.

— Sleep

The best way to avoid stress is to get enough sleep. During finals week—and the semester in general—managing to get the necessary hours to stay healthy may seem impossible between all the studying and extracurricular activities. The period when people are asleep is when the body repairs and recovers from the stresses of the day, and without the proper amount of hours, students can cause themselves added anxiety affecting their performance during the day.

Plan ahead by setting up a strict study schedule and sticking to it. By planning designated times to study, students can make sure they relax and get the rest they need to take them through to the end of the semester. Doing something creative, taking a break for yoga or taking a jog around Lake Ella—among eating healthy and getting enough rest—are all important factors in order to stay relaxed during finals week.
.

— Exercise

Rather than brewing another cup of coffee, hitting the gym or taking a jog can cash in the extra energy needed to get students through a few extra hours of studying. The endorphins released by exercise will also positively affect students’ state of mind by making them feel happier. Even if it is just taking a walk, a change of scenery from Strozier or your apartment can also help with refocusing and clearing the mind.
.

— Break from Technology

At some point during the day, completely stepping away from technology to regroup can give your mind the break it needs to keep studying. Studies find that smartphones increase stress, as people feel more pressure to respond for the messages throughout the day. Rather than being constantly connected, take some time to practice a few yoga poses without a phone vibrating in the background. Yoga is known as a reliever of stress by opening the shoulders and relieving neck tension. Specifically, the Eagle Pose has proved itself as a successful way to get rid of the added tension.

Finding a creative outlet while under stress can take students mind off their studies making the time spent after more effective. Repetitive motions can help relieve anxiety, so grab a paintbrush or knit a new scarf and practice deep breathing to take thoughts away from what is left to study. Doing something creative increases serotonin which helps improve mood, and the relaxation will lower your heart rate and cause a feeling of peace.
.

— Campus Activities

Look around campus for events being held around campus to aid in relaxation and distressing. In the past, free massages, boogie breaks and free food were just a few options students had to take their minds off the books. On Wednesday Dec. 4, 2013, Club Downunder will be hosting Be Kind, Unwind from 12-3 p.m., where students can take a break from studying to relax before finals week.

In spite of marriage laws, being gay has its own freedoms

It can be argued—rather easily—that the LGBT community is at a disadvantage. Some people still believe that we can be rid of this evil infliction, and send their children into the streets for not renouncing their sins. LGBT individuals have a difficult time finding work in conservative cities, and are still caricatured by conservative politicians as super villains out to destroy your family, specifically.

People always assume that we either are sharp dressers, that we know how to change a tire or that we’re confused. I’ve been a lesbian for a hot minute now and the only confusion I have is why it is so difficult to change a tire. That being said, I can only speak for my individual experience.

With all of that bad, can I just say that being a lesbian isn’t without its freedoms? Being a member of the Facebook generation, I am all too aware of the crippling social comparison that we’re all guilty of. I don’t exclude myself from this. Facebook gives us a wealthy of envy. I sometimes see passive-aggressive statuses (exclusively from my hetero friends) about how they don’t need to get married and have kids right now because they’re “doing them” or “putting work in” (#doingwork). I appreciate this sentiment, but I also took a 3000-level Shakespeare course and, methinks thou doth protest too much. There’s envy in these proclamations of independence and freedom.

Why? Because, have you seen the average newsfeed lately? Who isn’t churning out babies in a rather colonial-like style these days? Who isn’t settling down? Who isn’t constantly hitting refresh on their PlentyOfFish account in some desperate attempt to find a connection that will silence any living grandmothers at the Thanksgiving dinner table? Do you feel that pressure weighing down on you? Well, I don’t.

I’m not even allowed to get married in the Sunshine State and, last time I checked, all of my avenues for child-rearing are crazy expensive—or illegal. You see, all of those imagined pressures to rush through the best years of your life don’t exist to me. And, hey, fine by me. I don’t wake up until 1 p.m. on my days off, and I ate an unwrapped Snickers bar off the sidewalk one time. Am I really the kind of woman who needs to raise a tiny human who won’t be so psychologically damaged that they inflict harm upon others?

I can’t even commit to a fast food order. What makes anyone think that I’m ready to sign away half of my life to a legally binding agreement in which myself and some hypothetical other woman are literally required to keep loving each other? I make bad decisions all the time, the last thing I need to do is willingly get the law involved with my love life. However, let’s not forget the most important thing: it’s illegal in 33 states.

This is not to discredit getting married and having babies at my age, which is 23, by the way. I have dear friends and family members who have been lucky enough to find partners who genuinely make them better people. Some of them even have beautiful babies, whom I lurk on Instagram.

It makes my heart drop into my tingling ovaries and I am so proud of how amazing they are as parents, and how adorable their tiny doppelgangers are. I’m genuinely happy for them, but I don’t feel the pressure to do the same. I want to credit that to the fact that it just isn’t that easy for me. I am honored to live vicariously through them.
I’m able to feel genuine joy for them because I’m not personally interested in having those things. Now, when someone gets published in a huge journal or lands a super awesome career-job after graduation, that’s a little different.

I’m grateful for the love I have in my life. Being a lesbian, it is simply not a part of my reality that I should be exchanging nuptials or procreating. I imagine that this is an issue for some LGBT individuals, but I rather enjoy the freedom of not having that pressure. I’m sure that one day, I will feel the opposite of this. However, in the meantime, it ain’t all bad, you know? Sometimes, it’s more than okay to be gay.
