Record unemployment and rampant corporate avarice, empty houses but homeless families, dwindling opportunities in an increasingly paralyzed nation—these are the realities of 21st-century America, land of the free and home of the new middle class poor. Award-winning broadcaster Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West, one of the nation’s leading democratic intellectuals, co-hosts of Public Radio’s Smiley & West , now take on the “P” word—poverty.
The Rich and the Rest of Us is the next step in the journey that began with “The Poverty Tour: A Call to Conscience.” Smiley and West’s 18-city bus tour gave voice to the plight of impoverished Americans of all races, colors, and creeds. With 150 million Americans persistently poor or near poor, the highest numbers in over five decades, Smiley and West argue that now is the time to confront the underlying conditions of systemic poverty in America before it’s too late.
By placing the eradication of poverty in the context of the nation’s greatest moments of social transformation— such as the abolition of slavery, woman’s suffrage, and the labor and civil rights movements—ending poverty is sure to emerge as America’s 21st -century civil rights struggle.
As the middle class disappears and the safety net is shredded, Smiley and West, building on the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., ask us to confront our fear and complacency with 12 poverty changing ideas. They challenge us to re-examine our assumptions about poverty in America—what it really is and how to eliminate it now.

The BlackBerry 10 platform includes a variety of new features and improvements. The new BlackBerry Hub allows you to peek at your inbox from any app without having to stop what you’re doing. The touchscreen BlackBerry Keyboard learns your writing style and suggests words to help you type faster, more accurately. And you’ll be able to share content and apps right from your device using BBM Video with Screen Share.
You’ll be able to outfit your BlackBerry Z10 with a wealth of apps downloaded from BlackBerry World — games, music, videos, books, magazines and more. You can also browse and preview millions of high-quality DRM-free songs from your favorite artists, as well as download or rent movies and TV shows at BlackBerry World. Plus, the new BlackBerry World storefront gives you recommendations so it’s easy to find something new.
The BlackBerry Z10 is the first BlackBerry smartphone to run on AT&T’s ultra-fast 4G LTE network — the nation’s largest 4G network, covering 288 million people. Other connectivity features include Wireless-N Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n), Bluetooth 4.0, and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology — enabling you to make mobile payments, add a BBM contact, or swap photos with just a tap of your phone.
Access all your conversations at any time — from any app — with BlackBerry Hub, a single place where you can find all of your messages from your social networks to your personal and work e-mails. With a simple swipe, you can flow effortlessly in and out of your messages and conversations, and you can peek into other live apps without having to drop what you’re doing. Preview messages from the app you’re in, choose to reply, or reverse the gesture to go back to what you were doing.
The new touchscreen BlackBerry Keyboard provides an effortless typing experience. Its built-in intelligence learns your writing style and suggests words to help you type faster, more accurately and with the least amount of effort. And if you tend to mistype certain letters, the keyboard will remember and subtly adjust to make sure you hit the right key.
BBM Video with Screen Share
Switch your BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) text chat to a BBM Video conversation and talk face-to-face with those that matter to you most. Use the new Screen Share feature to show photos, your browser, or review a business document together. You can even share the view from your camera. The BBM app also supports voice calling.
Camera with Time Shift Mode
Take great shots with the super-sharp 8-megapixel camera, or switch to the front-facing camera and be part of the scene. Crop, enhance, and apply artistic filters, then display your masterpiece on the big screen for all to see. Simply connect to your TV via HDMI or tap Play on to link wirelessly through DLNA.
Using the camera’s Time Shift mode lets you take a picture using an ultra-short video — capturing milliseconds before and after your photo — so you can choose the exact moment in time when your subjects look best to create the ideal shot. It lets you select different areas in the same photo, choose the best expressions and poses, and then combine them to create one great shot. Once your photos are the best they can be, use Story Maker to weave them together and make a movie with music to share with the world.

What is 4G?
4G is a wireless technology term meaning “Fourth Generation.” 4G follows 3G as the latest addition to AT&T’s mobile broadband network. When combined with enhanced backhaul, 4G means faster speeds, where data transfers take less time to complete.
AT&T has upgraded the software of its nationwide mobile broadband network with HSPA+ which, with enhanced backhaul, enables speeds up to 4x faster than AT&T’s already fast mobile broadband speeds. And now, AT&T is evolving to even faster 4G speeds with the launch of AT&T’s 4G LTE technology in select markets.
Backhaul is one of the major pieces of a telecommunications network. Think of it as the limbs connecting AT&T’s cell towers with AT&T’s backbone network that provides access to the Internet.
How does AT&T 4G differ from other 4G networks?
AT&T is the only network offering two layers of 4G technology: HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul and LTE, both capable of delivering 4G speeds. Customers will have access to fast speeds as they move in and out of 4G LTE areas. Customers of competitors who do not have HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul are likely to see a steep drop-off in speeds when they move out of LTE areas.
In areas where either AT&T’s 3G or 4G network is not available, you’ll continue to receive service on the AT&T EDGE network, which offers availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways.
